In todays "always on" digital world we all need to take our online digital security seriously. Quite often we are asked to recommend a suitable security or anti-virus product. Note, the opinions, thoughts and ramblings here are based on our own humble experiences.

Over the years we've tried a lot of the mainstream packages e.g. Norton, McAfee, Eset NOD, Kaspersky, Panda and so on, together with some of the lesser known products such as ClamWin. Each have their own pros and cons. Each new version of the products in turn may have new pros and cons.

For some time NOD32 has been a fine product, and still is, however recently it has been removed from our own laptops and desktops in protest.

Under Vista, a Windows Security Centre message popped up informing us that "ESET NOD32 Anti-virus 3.0 is on but is reporting its status to Windows Security Centre in a format that is no longer supported"....apparently the only course of action was to pay for an upgrade to a product which was previously working. We have now installed Kaspersky and so far so good. Like NOD32, Kaspersky is a light footprint application which doesn't appear to hog system it does not come up with any nasty messages in Windows Security Centre.

In our opinion NOD32 is a good product and indeed we still use it for protecting Windows based servers, we just don't like being forced to upgrade something that has been running fine.
